A broad spectrum of programs and facilities are available to Somerset County employers for the training and continuing education of their employees. The rapidly growing and expanding University of Maryland Eastern Shore is located in Princess Anne, the County Seat. Offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs as well as continuing education courses, UMES can also provide industry with support and research services to business and industry.
Several vocational and technical courses are taught at Somerset County's J. Millard Tawes Vocational Center. The school works with industry to tailor programs to employer needs. Wor-Wic Community College, a two year occupation oriented "college without walls" holds classes throughout the Lower Eastern Shore. An active Private Industry Council administers numerous structured employment instruction courses and cost-effective on-the-job training programs.
New and expanding businesses also receive employee training and recruitment assistance from the Maryland Industrial Training program. These services which are available at virtually no cost to the employer include:
assistance locating and/or training instructors,
recruiting and screening workers,
conducting job/task analyses,
preparing training manuals or audio-visual materials, and
devising orientation programs.
