Print & Ship plans grand opening
By Wendy Thompson • May 5, 2010

PRINCESS ANNE -- Everything's shipshape at Princess Anne's newest business venture. Navy veterans Bryan and Lisa Bailey have just opened Print & Ship in Princess Anne Village, the recently-completed complex on Route 13 and UMES Boulevard.

The grand opening for Print & Ship will take place this Friday, May 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. Catering will be by Watermen's Inn.

The 1,200-square-foot facility offers a complete range of printing and shipping services to residents and businesses in Somerset County and beyond.
"Print & Ship is the only company of its kind south of Salisbury on the Eastern Shore," said Bryan Bailey, as he checked out the brand-new Xerox Docucolor the rapid, printing-laminating-and-binding machine that reproduces high-quality images on all thicknesses of paper, cardboard, and even film. "Businesses are able to get services right here in town."

Everything from invitations, business cards, letterhead, brochures, menus, display cards, adhesive labels, and presentation transparencies is available -- with a wide-format printer, for architectural plans, banners and posters, arriving at the end of May.

All customers have to do is submit their requirements personally or by e-mail. A graphic design service is also on hand.

"We focus on personal service at competitive prices," said Bailey.
Being on the spot means there are no hidden shipping and handling fees, either. A delivery service is available on request.

"We're a totally private company, not tied to any franchise," Bailey said.
Print & Ship will gift wrap and deliver packages of all sizes. As an authorized shipping center for FedEx, the company offers world-wide coverage. Secure mail boxes are also for rent and packages are held for pickup. In-store notary, passport photos and fax services are available.

The couple moved to Princess Anne 13 years ago when they were posted to Wallops Island after traveling the world with the Navy.

"We knew we eventually wanted to open a business here," said Bailey. "It's a very pretty little town, the perfect size and location."

On their retirement, two years ago, the pair concentrated on researching their options. Having worked in a printing business before enlisting, Bailey felt the area needed such a service.

Thanks to support from local services and organizations, the process went very smoothly, he said.

Study on UMES and Somerset hotel approved

PRINCESS ANNE -- The Somerset County Commissioners gave approval for a hotel feasibility study -- a project that involves the county, UMES and the federal Rural Development program.

One firm, Revpar International of Vienna, Va., responded to a request for proposals to look at developing a hotel along the Route 13 corridor in Princess Anne, said Danny Thompson, director of the Somerset County Economic Development Commission.

Revpar has done similar studies in the Salisbury area, including one for a Hampton Inn in Fruitland, he said.

Thompson said the University of Maryland Eastern Shore has been involved because it operates a hotel and restaurant management program on campus, and a hotel nearby could provide employment opportunities.

"If we're going to train students in Somerset County, then we need to try to retain them," he said.

A hotel also could provide on-the-job training before students graduate.

The university and the county also have accommodations needs that aren't being met, he said.

A year ago, Economic Development Commission members and UMES officials traveled to the University of Delaware to see a Marriott hotel on that campus, Thompson said.

While the Somerset County study will not be site-specific, it will likely look at the Princess Anne Village commercial development at the intersection of Route 13 and UMES Boulevard.

The developer has recently completed the first phase, which includes spaces for retail shops and restaurants. A hotel and conference center is part of the tentative plan for the second phase.

Thompson said Rural Development has allocated about $25,000 for the study.

Ethics ordinance

County Commissioners held a public hearing this week on an ethics ordinance that updates one that has been in place since 1990.

The updated measure changes the dollar amount of gifts county officials may accept from $10 to $30.

It also requires county officials and employees drawing a salary of $45,000 or more to file an annual financial disclosure. The current limit is $25,000.

There was no public comment on the ordinance, which is expected to be adopted May 25.
